GREAT MATCH UPS

6/7/2016

I love tennis so am glued to Wimbledon at this time of year (well as much as I can manage anyway, other commitments allowing!).  Really loved the matches today between Federer and Cilic and Murray and Tsonga. Two very good match ups, two matches I think which will go down as classics.

In your fiction what would count as good match ups?  For example, in my stories, Eileen trains up a young fairy called Hanastrew, who develops into powerful fairy godmother in her own right and takes over Eileen's role in fighting evil when the latter defects to Earth.  Eileen, prior to her defection, realises how talented Hanastrew is and, rather than resenting it, encourages it.  She sees Hanastrew, correctly, as a good match for her.

So who would be a good match for your main characters?  The great thing is they need not be friends.  They can be someone unexpected but there should be a good reason why they are the match up to that character.  Sometimes someone can reflect the virtues/faults of the main characters.  Equally they can react against these things so the main character(s) could see how things might have gone for them had they chosen to take a different path in life.

SIGNS OF AN EVIL, MAGICAL MEGLOMANIAC

5/7/2016

  1. They have minions, millions of the little beggars, all just longing to carry out their boss's wishes (because they know full well they'll die horribly if they don't).
  2. They always want to tell you their plans in full so you know how clever they are.  False modesty really is not a problem for these people.
  3. They either live in a cavern or a castle, strongly fortified and, strangely, very badly lit.  It's not because they can't afford the electric. Bad lighting seems to be compulsory.  It forms part of the atmosphere.
  4. They can't bear the thought of anyone being better than them in anything, especially magic.
  5. There's no such thing as a good magical meglomaniac.

MOST POPULAR WISHES RECEIVED BY FAIRY GODMOTHERS

4/7/2016

  1. Transformation.  Usually from rags to riches.  Sometimes from ugly to beautiful.  There's a lot of folk in the world of fairytales who are definitely not happy with the way they are.
  2. Defeating the Enemy.  This usually translates as "please obliterate the enemy for me", which the fairy godmother may grant if the enemy is a truly evil threat to many.  Sometimes though it means helping the "wishee" to develop self confidence and other skills that enable them to rise above those taunting them.
  3. Wisdom.  Sometimes asked for by the more foreseeing client who, in anticipation of their life being changed for the better (often going on to become royal by marriage), realise they need wisdom to know how to manage that new life and not make a complete hash of it.
  4. Invisibility.  Rarely granted as the fairy godmother is automatically suspicious as to why anyone would want this and consider it is highly unlikely to be for any purpose remotely honourable.
  5. To Make Ends Meet/Survive/Prosper.  The client does not necessarily need to be transformed to achieve this but do need their circumstances to drastically improve.

WHAT NOT TO SAY TO A FAIRY TALE HERO/HEROINE

3/7/2016

  1. You do realise you will have to face the big bad wolf/maneating monster before becoming said hero/heroine, don't you?  Don't look so worried.  You'll be fine, honest!
  2. You are bound to cross the path of a wicked witch/treacherous wizard but you will find a way of overcoming them/shoving them in a heated oven etc.  Don't look like that.  You will, else the story won't work.  And it's no good saying it's all right for me, you are the hero/heroine.
  3. Yes, fate can be a cruel beggar, it's funny you should mention that.
  4. There isn't a time limit for how long you've got to work all hours in dreadful conditions for an awful stepmother and stepsisters.  Your fairy godmother will turn up when she's ready.  Sorry, love, that's just the way it is.
  5. You thought coming across a cottage made out of confectionery and other goodies was the end to all your problems?  Wrong!  At best you'd get Type 2 Diabetes scoffing that lot, at worst you face the witch who uses said cottage to entice the unwary into her oven.  Perhaps you should develop your common sense more.
  6. Yes, anyone offering you magic beans in return for a cow should be considered a con artist.  Too late now?  Oh dear...
  7. Yes, it is odd three bears choose to live in a cottage but it would be a good idea not to eat their food, trash their furniture and so on.  Best give the place a wide berth.  Too late now?  Oh dear...  hope you can run fast.
  8. If anyone offers you untold wealth in exchange for an old lamp, keep the lamp and it might be a good idea to tell any future spouse/partner, why that lamp should never leave your possession.  She's disappeared along with all the wealth you gained?  Hmm...  you didn't tell her, did you?  Feeling a bit stupid now?  Well you should do...
  9. Look, you know the woman wanted to kill you.  You know she's capable of evil magic.  And this strange woman turns up at your cottage offering you a big red shiny apple...  the dwarves did tell you to watch out for strangers.  Yet you still ate the apple...  Yes I know it's all worked out okay but perhaps next time you might be better off still if you listened to the dwarves in the first place.
  10. If you come across magical objects that can talk, do make sure they are happy for you to become their new owner before you remove them else they'll betray you.  The next thing you'll know is there'll be an angry giant pursuing you.  Oh?  You're on the run right now are you?  Oops!  Hope you're handy with an axe, you'll need to be.

wish list

2/7/2016

If ever there was an appropriate place for a wish list, it is in the magical realm!   A fairy godmother's wish list could look as follows below.  In my magical realm, they are not allowed to grant their own wishes but have to submit their requests to the Queen and her Council for consideration. They don't rush their decisions, much to the frustration of the law abiding fairy godmother who feel she has submitted a reasonable request.  So her wishes would be:-

  1. That the Queen and her Council take less than 72 hours to make up their minds to grant wish requests.  The fairy government needs to be less bureaucratic.  This is really annoying given the government makes up its mind much quicker than this on a whole range of other matters.
  2. That the fairy godmother in question does not have to go out and fight any more dragons as both godmother and dragonkind are sick of the sight of each other.
  3. That fairy godmothers can top up their natural "in the blood" magic less often from the Fountain of Youth at the Palace.  It is inconvenient for fairy godmothers to come so far to get to this point.  Not everyone lives near the Palace.
  4. Or the Queen installs a second Fountain of Youth at a more central location, making it easier to reach.
  5. That the fairy godmother might have a better selection of materials to work with.  There is a limit to what you can do with pumpkins.

HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS

2/7/2016

What sort of documents exist in your fictional setting(s)?  Diaries, letters, reports and so on?  Who writes these?  Are these documents available for anyone to see?

In my fiction, the Queen keeps her own archives in the Palace Library but there is a restricted section where you need authority to read on so most do not bother.  In any setting there must be some information where  restrictions of access are necessary, almost certainly on security grounds, so what or who is the threat here?  Who is your historical expert in your fiction?  Is there anyone writing alternative histories (because they disagree with the official version or feel things have been left out)?

What controversial documents are in your fictional archives?  Could the archive documents unleash choas if they were made public or is it  a case everyone knows what is is them, it is just the fine details that cannot be published?

SPECIAL PLACES

1/7/2016

Away Days: Salisbury is my latest Chandler's Ford Today post and takes a look at one of my favourite places to visit.

What are the special places your characters like to visit in your fictional setting and why did they pick the ones they have?  Are they allowed to go there or is tourism discouraged?  What places are of national/global importance and why?

Different characters will also have different places that are special to them (though there will be some overlap with some places). So why has character A chosen one place and character B another?  Do they fall out over this?

What is special about your fictional world as a whole?  What makes you want to write about it/for it?  What makes your characters happy to dwell in this fictional world?

    Author

I'm Allison Symes and I write novels, short stories as well as some scripts and poems.  I love setting my work in my magical world, the Fairy Kingdom, and my favourite character is Eileen, who believes hypocrisy is something that happens to other people without caring that statement is hypocritical in itself!  Eileen is huge fun to write for and about.
