APPROPRIATE SONGS FOR MY CHARACTERS
It Ain’t What You Do, It’s the Way That You Do It by Bananarama. Hanastrew’s and Eileen’s anthem. Though the Witch might like it too.
When Will I Be Loved? By the Everley Brothers, also Dave Edmunds/Nick Lowe. This one is for the Queen.
Since You’ve Been Gone by Rainbow. The Queen would use the title to prefix all her complaints to Eileen about changes in the Kingdom since the latter’s defection.
Love Me Tender by Elvis Presley. Derek’s plea to Eileen, more accurate than he knows given she can be very brutal indeed with a wand.
Beat It by Michael Jackson. The fairy squad’s anthem.
Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now by The Smiths. Jenny’s theme when in the grip of PND. Also the Queen’s given she’s not happy with the way things turn out with Eileen and Jenny. The Queen prefers unquestioning obedience and while she hasn’t always had this, it’s amazing how one’s outlook changes when one was lucky to survive an overthrow.
I Could Be So Lucky by Kylie Minogue - this would be sung at Wes to taunt him given his luck record is not envied by anyone. Indeed Stan would love to wind him up with it.
Stay Now by Hazel O’Connor. This has the best saxophone solo, sorry it beats Baker Street into a cocked hat, it just does. As for the theme, definitely one for Wes and Isabel.
I Heard It Through the Grapevine by Marvin Gaye. Roherum’s unofficial anthem.
Mercy by the excellent Duffy. This is what Wes would plead for if he could find the sod who keeps giving him rotten luck. I have a wonderful book called 500 Years of Humorous Prose compiled by Frank Muir. In there is a piece about an author who gets moaned at by his characters coming to life - for example the maiden forced to marry the Wicked Duke moaning about that, the Duke moaning about always being wicked and so on. If my characters came to life one would be Eileen to make sure I give her all the best lines and the other would be Wes to try to get me to palm the bad luck off on to Stan.
Now and Always by Nick Lowe. This is for the Queen who thinks this is the length of time anyone should show loyalty to her for - and if there was a way they could still do it after death, she’d want that too!
In the Year 2525 - sorry can’t remember the artists (male duo). This is a wonderful song about how they see the future panning out. Indeed it is one of the few songs that looks into the future, which is a gift the Queen has.
