BIOGRAPHY
I’m Allison
Symes. I write fairy tales with bite -
short stories, novels, poems and scripts.
Bridge House Publishing published my fairytale, A Helping Hand, in their 2009 Alternative Renditions anthology. The first three chapters of my novel, The Trouble With Mother, were long-listed in the Bridge House Debut Novel competition. From over 70 entries The Trouble With Mother made it to the final 13.
I won second prize in the Writers’ News First Line competition with Life is What You Make It. I was also short-listed in their Last Line competition with Can You Hear Me? For their New Year Resolutions competition I was pleased to be shortlisted with I Will Do Better Next Time.
My stories, A Few Choice Words, The End Game, Links, Punish The Innocent, The Lady In White, Going My Own Way and poems, The Cake Bake, My New Life and Road Testing are published at www.shortbreadstories.com, the Shortbread Short Stories website. My poem, No Time, is also on the Shortbread site and tackles the theme of having "no time to stand and stare".
My story, Losing Myself, is now available on the Café Lit website.
I was awarded Commended status for my story, The Help Supplier, at the 2011 Winchester Writers’ Conference.
My short story Got You! became one of the seven short story finalists at the 2011 Brit Writers Awards giving me an opportunity to "glam up" (as much as I can anyway!) for the Awards Evening held at Madame Tussards in October 2011. I was thrilled to be shortlisted and I loved the chance to have a night out thanks to something I'd written.
I attend the Winchester Writers’ Conference and subscribe to Mslexia and Writers' News/Writing Magazine. I am a member of the P.G. Wodehouse Society (UK), the Association of Christian Writers and an Associate Member of the Society of Authors.
I am currently working on a short story collection. I've had another piece, Out of Time, provisionally accepted for an anthology to raise funds for the National Autistic Society. The anthology's working title is Shambelurking and Other Stories 2 and hopefully will be out next year. Marit Meredith is the editor and I really hope the anthology does well.
