KINGDOM HISTORY
The Kingdom has faced external threats in its time. At the time of Eileen’s story, this threat has been dormant for over a thousand years. But the realm has faced and fought off all kinds of alien beings wanting to grab the magical resources of the Fairy Kingdom for themselves. External wars are one of the few events which tends to unite the entire Kingdom. Sprites who are usually despised are now considered upstanding members of the community as they fight really well and have a long and fairly good record in coming to the realm’s aid in its hour of need. Naturally once any threats go the sprites resume being, in the general public’s eyes, lazy, ill mannered, fighting brutes, fit for nothing. The sprite communities have got used to this. It is partially deserved and that which isn’t, well they don’t bother fighting over that. It just wastes time.
The sprite communities have also been set up and accused of causing wars, usually by those witches or wizards, always keen for a scapegoat, who came off second best in the scrap and want the fairy royals to take their temper out on someone else. It has never worked though it has done nothing for the sprites either. It doesn’t help that sprites do fight amongst themselves, usually for stupid reasons. Sprites are also looked down for irresponsible attitudes to breeding. Where land has been made barren and they breed like rabbits on Earth, there are many who can foresee a war coming simply due to this.
It is also felt that the Kingdom will have another external war before too long. There are loads of alien species out there and it’s a matter of time before one of them decides to try to steal the magic again. Eileen believes the Queen’s arrogant attitude is likely to speed this up. Naturally the Queen does not agree! There are patrols at the various dimension barriers but Eileen feels these need to be beefed up. She’d like to see the patrol groups practice magic more aggressively. It is known that brief glimpses of the world on the other side of the barrier can be seen so to have the Kingdom patrol units actively engaged in mock fighting ought to serve as a warning to anyone taking a quick peep. So far Queen and Council have rejected this on the grounds of unnecessary waste of magical energy.
The great irony is that the Kingdom despises humanity for our warlike tendencies. They don’t believe in seeing themselves as others see them! Eileen, bless her, has often condemned this blatant hypocrisy and it is widely whispered if it were not for her royal status she would be jailed for such remarks. The hierarchy can be stunningly sensitive to criticism at times. In fairness, the fairy royals have worked tirelessly for centuries to try to stop infighting between the varioius magical species. Eileen wanted to bridge damaged relationships between the fairy royals and the Chief Witch but there was no way the Queen would accept that.
