- Flying. With or without broomstick, all would need to prove they can fly. The test is not dissimilar to a driving test. There are theory and practical tests and all need to pass them within a certain time limit.
- Transformation. The more powerful the magical being the more they are able to transform into a huge range of different shapes and creatures. But the most basic magical practitioner should be able to transform themselves into three different forms and change back again.
- Invisibility. Again the more powerful the being, the longer they can stay invisible (and find it easier to detect invisibility in others). But again all magical beings, no matter how lowly, can be invisible for long enough tog et out of most forms of trouble. And they are tested for this.
- Catering. Nothing can beat real, genuine food for taste but all magical beings need to be able to create something to eat and drink using magic on the grounds nobody ever knows when they will need to do this for real.
- Being able to detect the presence of abnormal magical presences. Abnormal has a wide meaning in the magical world but everyone should be able to sense evil when it is about. And that is what is normally meant by abnormal magical presence.
The last thing any magical world needs is unqualified magical beings let loose all over the place. The damage they could cause is immense. Hence the need for magical schools, universities and so on. So what would be the basic magical tests for competence? Allowing there would be exams in specialist subjects, everyone in my fictional Fairy Kingdom would have to prove competent in the following.

AuthorI'm Allison Symes and I write novels, short stories as well as some scripts and poems. I love setting my work in my magical world, the Fairy Kingdom, and my favourite character is Eileen, who believes hypocrisy is something that happens to other people without caring that statement is hypocritical in itself! Eileen is huge fun to write for and about. Archives
